Artist biography

Michael Naemsch
International artist

Michael Naemsch has taught Art at L’Amoreaux Collegiate Institute in Toronto, Canada for 15 years. He was also a teacher of History and Social Sciences and has been teaching for 28 years. Michael is a full time artist using watercolour, oil, acrylic paints and pastels. He paints in his studios in Canada and Barbados.

His primary focus has been local Barbados scenery and the life of the people. His love for the history of Barbados has produced a variety of paintings on topics such as the people, architecture and local animals of the past and present. His art is eclectic and it displays his interest in movement, composition, patterns and value. His art is representational and realistic. Some pieces are abstract and impressionistic.

A secondary focus is painting portraits of classic jazz musicians such as Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Louis Armstrong which show his skill in capturing the "soul of the musician".

More recent focuses are his Nude artworks in oil on canvas and cityscapes of Toronto and major cities.

Michael is also an excellent photographer. His photographs have won the “HERE AND NOW” first prize. Also, his photography placed as a top 100 finalist (out of 47,000) in the Canon Photo Contest. Many of his paintings originate from photos taken on hikes in Canada and Barbados.

Corporate Commissions And Collections

His paintings can be found in the collections of many corporations in Canada and Barbados such as:

  1. Banks (Breweries) Ltd, the maker of the Beer of Barbados.
  2. Encana Ltd, a Canadian company which is based in Calgary, Canada.
  3. Scotiabank, in Barbados, which commissioned him to paint their first building to commemorate their 50th anniversary in 2006.
  4. Scotiabank, International Marketing, Toronto, which commissioned him to paint a cricket mural (8ft x 20ft) in 2006 for the Cricket World Cup. The mural was reproduced and placed in 15 Caribbean countries in ovals, airports and branches.
  5. Mount Gay Remy-Cointreau commissioned him to paint a mural of their head office (4ft x 8ft).
  6. Mr. Eugene Melnyk, of Biovale, a Canadian and the owner of Berts’ Bar, has commissioned him to do various paintings.
  7. Giclee prints of Michaels’ artwork decorate the walls of the rooms of The Elegant Hotels, Barbados; and the offices of the First Caribbean International Bank (CIBC/BARCLAYS MERGED).
  8. Several of his paintings have been donated to auctions or raffled off for charities, such as the “Optimist Club”, “Village of Hope” and Challenor House, Barbados.
